10 Unique Ways To Use Pinterest Secret Boards [Infographic]

Have you ever wanted to pin something on Pinterest but not tell the whole world about it? Do you want to create a gift list for that special occasion or a vision board for your business on Pinterest but keep it under wraps? Well now you can because last November, Pinterest rolled out its long-awaitedPinterest Secret Boards.
You may be wondering what is the point of Pinterest Secret Boards. I know I asked myself this when they first launched.
After all, the reason you are using Pinterest is to get more exposure for your brand, and to market your products and services. You most likely want to get your images shared across the social network so they can (hopefully) go viral and drive tons of traffic back to your website. But traffic aside, there are several important reasons why brands may want to create pinterest secret boards.
Before I outline my own #10 top reasons to use secret boards, let’s look at how you can create Secret Boards on Pinterest.

How To Make A Pinterest Secret Board

Creating Pinterest secret board is an absolute breeze. In fact, Pinterest offers 2 ways to do this once you have logged in to your account:
#1 Scroll down to the bottom of your profile. You will notice that Pinterest automatically gives you 3 blank secret boards at the bottom of the page titled Create A Secret Board.

These can only be seen by you (the board creator) and any contributors you choose to add. Just click on one and begin pinning.
#2 Go to the Add tab at the top right-hand corner of your page. Choose the option Create A Board and move the slider button to secret (red) in the settings.

Then, go to your profile, click on the Boards tab and scroll down until you see the option for Create a Secret Board.

Secret Boards 101

  • Pinterest limits you to 3 secret boards at any one time. You may however collaborate with others on a secret board without it counting towards your total. If you make 1 secret board public, you will automatically get 1 new secret board.
  • Secret boards can be made public by going to Edit Board and moving the slider button to “on”. Just be aware that once you make a private board public, you can’t reverse it.
  • When you add pins to secret boards they won’t show up anywhere – not in the categories, search results, your home feed or your followers’ feeds. Pinterest won’t even alert another pinner if you repin their content. This alone makes secret boards a very powerful tool for conducting competitor research and market intelligence.
  • Existing public boards can’t be made private because the images on that board may have already been repinned. You can however create a new secret board by scrolling to the bottom of your profile.
  • Board creators have the power to make the board public at any time and with it, any content that has been pinned to that board. So if you don’t want your pins to be visible, delete them. To remove yourself  from that board click Leave to the right of your name.
